The Great Escape

A welcoming mountain retreat in Blowing Rock, designed for family, fun, and connection with nature.

Project Description

Situated in the breathtaking mountains of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, this second home was conceived as a welcoming retreat for a large, multi-generational family. The property’s unique location, with stunning mountain views and a shared border with a nature preserve, set the stage for a design that balances comfort, versatility, and a deep connection to the surrounding landscape.

Designed to cater to both small and large gatherings, the home features spaces for everyone—from swimming and movies to art studios and a meadow for outdoor sports. The layout is flexible, with durable furnishings and finishes that will age beautifully, creating a space that feels lived-in and personal. Warm, eclectic touches throughout ensure the home is inviting rather than overly polished.

The design incorporates playful, personal elements that reflect the owner’s sense of humor, like a powder room tiled with vintage license plates inspired by a beloved family restaurant. This whimsical approach infuses the house with personality and makes each space feel unique and meaningful. The result is a contemporary, unpretentious home that feels like a true escape, offering comfort, joy, and a touch of nostalgia for all who visit.
